Great advice, though in my experience the "30% rule", not letting any one client supply more than 30% of your freelance income doesn't always work out. In fact, in my most lucrative times, one client has stood head and shoulders above the rest. The key in these cases is to assume that your best paying gigs could vanish at any time and brace yourself accordingly...

Hi Maggie and Jack, thanks. Glad the Q&A was helpful.

Maggie, freelance writing is a hot career in that it's desired by many (Brian told me it's one of the top 20 Vocation Vacations requested). There are many opportunities for those who write well and know how to sell their services. But there are also many laid off journalists getting into freelance writing now, so it's definitely not a career for someone who's unwilling to hustle. Have to find a way to stand out from the competition. If I can answer more Qs, you can find me at www.anti9to5guide.com.
